Gallery Section

In this section, I have included images and videos with descriptions as well as their significance to my other blog posts for the project. These sources range anywhere from posters, clips from wartime action, social movement propaganda, speeches from the United States' point of view, and even Japanese newspaper covers. While many of the sources I was able to research were from the interwar period and the wartime period (mainly the latter years), I tried my best to include sources that told a story and fit as puzzle pieces so to speak that would help tell the greater story of the Pacific War's causes and its effects on both Japan and the United States.

1935 Farmer's Movement Poster

These posters from the farmers movements were created and backed by radical reformers. These laborers were poverty stricken, even during a time of rapid economic expansion in Japan (mainly inustrial).

Laborer's Movement Poster

Similar to the farmer's movement posters, the laborer posters were from leftwing protesters who were deep into Japanese labor disputes during and after Japan's takeover of Manchuria in 1931.

Propaganda Poster from Manchukuo

This painting was clearly designed to show the unity and prosperity that would come from Japan taking over Manchuria. It's bubbly effect also was used to help encourage emigration to Manchuria, as the man in the painting looks like a laborer.

U.S. Reporting on Manchuria Conflict

Here is a U.S. video clip which reports the unfolding events in the Sino-Japanese War. The clips speal for themselves in showing that this situation was far from mild.

Shashin Shuho Magazine Cover

11/30/38 Magazine cover from WWII era propaganda magazine. It's title translates to "Anti-Japanese souvenirs Abandoned Hankou Japanese concession." Basically the message here was anything Anti Japan will not be tolerated. This reflects the impact that mass media had on the thoughts and opinions of many and how they helped contribute to the war's beginning.

Shashin Shuho Magazine Cover

This 9/14/38 magazine cover goes back to the Manchuria Conflict, as the cover shows a mother and her daughter happy with their situation in Manchuria. If I'm not mistaken, this cover dates back to the one year anniversary of the Sino Japanese War. One of the headlines in the magazine translates to "...when the fire of the Holy War exploded throughout Manchukuo..." They consider the Sino Japanese War somewhat of a pilgrimage.

Cover from three days after the attack at Pearl Harbor. The significance of this cover is rooted in the military's power. This propaganda magazine includes an excerpt from an article which reads: "as soon as possible, the motivation of patriotism will be devoted directly to the mission of national defense, and the temporary conscription inspection for graduates of this year has already been carried out from December 1st, and many student soldiers are bravely involved in this. On the other hand, due to this, the number of people who are in school or who hold a sword early after graduation and get on the front line of national defense will increase, and school training will finally become more important. At the Ministry of Education."

Approved Resolution to Enter War

This is the approved document signed by President Roosevelt that confirmed the U.S. entry to WWII. I'd say it's significance is that it happened immediately following Pearl Harbor.

London Naval Treaty

A snippet from the London Naval Treaty. This shows Japanese Foreign Affairs Minister, Baron Kijuro Shidehara replying to the lobsided Naval Treaty with approval from Japan. What is significant about this is that although he confirmed it here, this caused much internal turmoil and distrust for Japan.

Cover from 6/14/39 where a portion reads: "The Sino-Japanese War costs have already risen enormously since the outbreak of the incident. The planned amount of public debt issuance for this purpose is 6 billion yen this year alone, and 4 billion yen to expand productivity-most of this will be used to procure supplies for the war. As a result, domestic goods will become more inconvenient, and the necessities of people's lives will also be in short supply." This is shocking, because although this is supposed to be a pro-Japanese propaganda magazine, it is blatanly admitting that the Sino Japanese War will most likely negatively impact the people. How did this get approved?

Interesting protest poster from the Farmer's Movement. It looks like the man drawn is calling on all people to join the movement.

Labor Movement Poste

Yet another interesting cartoon poster from the ongoing labor protests in the 1930s. I'm not exactly sure what the characters on the poster say, but this is clearly anti-government. The question is: how much effect did it have?

Notification of Disbandment of Political

This is a letter from Prince Konoe Fumimaro written in 1940. Fumimaro wanted a new and powerful leadership system, but the singular political party never actually carried through. Its significance however did, as the militant mentality was being taken on by more and more political figures.
